Veterinary assistant course questions?

they have a college in my area that has pre-veterinary courses and then your suppose to go to a vet school after that. I was wondering, if i just wanted to be a veterinary assistant and not an actual veterinarian, would i be able to just take the "pre" classes and get some sort of degree or do i absolutely have to go to a veterinary school after the pre-classes.
